Where Companies are on the Journey Toward Lakehouse or Unified Data Platform Adoption

As companies embrace advanced analytics and AI, they should be adopting a Data Lakehouse or another type of platform for unifying data, such as cloud data warehouses. Unified data platforms are needed to handle the huge data volumes and diverse types of information required to fuel AI.

At TSL Tech Research, we wanted to find out which stage of Data Lakehouse and unified data platform adoption companies have reached. When we surveyed almost 140 IT leaders at firms with between 1k and 5k employees, we found that most businesses are still in the early stages of Lakehouse adoption.

Stages in the Data Lakehouse Journey

When we asked IT professionals where their organizations were on the journey toward adopting a Lakehouse or unified data platform, the results were as follows:

Key Takeaways:

Almost half of the companies surveyed have no plans to adopt a Lakehouse while nearly 20% are evaluating Lakehouse solutions. Although this finding is troubling from the standpoint of digital transformation, it presents opportunities for IT service firms to promote their offerings related to Data Lakehouse architecture and migration.

What Lack of Progress Toward a Data Lakehouse Means

Many of the companies surveyed are in the early stages of adopting a Data Lakehouse. Companies that are in the evaluation stage are a target audience for managed service providers (MSPs) that implement Data Lakehouse architecture.

Only 7% of companies are currently migrating to Lakehouse, while the same percentage have completed implementation. These findings mean that the market for these services is relatively wide open for MSPs that can persuade organizations to progress in their Lakehouse adoption journey.

While data lakes allow companies to store vast amounts of raw data, they lack the structure and governance needed for machine learning (ML) and AI. IT service providers should remind organizations in their target market of these pain points and why a unified data platform is the answer.

Using the Cloud as a Data Platform

While 8% of the companies surveyed are sticking with separate data lakes and warehouses, 12% have adopted the cloud as a means of unifying the data they need to feed AI. Cloud service providers (CSPs) can promote their migration services to organizations that are considering a move to the cloud for use as a unified data platform.

Cloud data warehouses provide a fully managed database service for storing and analyzing large volumes of data. By hosting a data warehouse in the cloud, companies gain a scalable, flexible, and affordable infrastructure to support AI analytics.

Progressing in the Data Lakehouse Journey

Companies need help with progressing their journey toward implementing the Data Lakehouse architecture needed to support today’s AI workloads. That’s where IT service firms can step in. By promoting their migration services, MSPs can reach organizations that need to increase their AI maturity by moving to a unified data platform.
